Oregon Men Repeat, Washington Women Win First Title At NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship

Liberty's Samuel Chelanga and Oregon's Galen Rupp

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – When teams and spectators arrived at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course on Tuesday morning, they knew they were in for a cold and rainy day at the course. Despite the less than favorable conditions, two individual course records fell and new standards were set at the 2008 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships.

The women took to the course first and braved the cold, windy and rainy conditions to put on an impressive race. The race was dominated by Washington, who placed all five of their athletes in the top 30 to compile a team score of 79 points. The NCAA title was the first for the No.1-ranked Huskies in school history and broke a string of three-straight NCAA team championships for Stanford.

Oregon finished as the runner-up for the second straight season, as the Ducks compiled a team score of 131 to finish ahead of Florida State in third place with 163 points. West Virginia placed fourth in the race with a team score of 198 and Princeton rounded out the top five with a team score of 220.

Two-time defending champion Sally Kipyego led nearly the entire race to win her third-consecutive NCAA championship. Her time of 19:28.1 broke the previous course record of 19:30.9, which she set at the 2007 NCAA Championship in Terre Haute. Florida State’s Susan Kuijken raced right next to Kipyego for the majority of the race but fell just a bit short in second place with a time of 19:34.9.

Virginia Tech’s Tasmin Fanning was the third-place finisher in a time of 19:37.1 and finished just behind the leaders. North Carolina’s Brianna Felnagle finished in fourth place with a time of 19:53.3 and Racheal Marchand of Iowa rounded out the top five with a time of 19:54.9.

Following the completion of the women’s race, the men took to the course in search of a national championship. The defending champion and No. 1-ranked Oregon Ducks finished with five runners in the top 50 to secure their second-straight NCAA title with a team score of 93. The championship was the fifth for Oregon in the school’s history and fifth for head coach Vin Lananna in his career (two at Oregon, three at Stanford).

Iona was the runner-up with team score of 147 and had two individuals in the top five to help earn the second-place finish. Stanford came in third place with a time score of 227 points, led by freshman Chris Derrick in sixth place, just two points ahead of Wisconsin in fourth place with 229 points. Auburn rounded out the top five in fifth place with a score of 264.

The race boiled down to a two-man contest between Galen Rupp of Oregon and Samuel Chelanga of Liberty. The pair stayed side-by-side throughout most of the race before Rupp sprinted ahead of Chelanga in the last 1000 meters to win and set a new course record of 29:03.2. Rupp, a 2008 Olympian for the United States in Beijing, topped the previous mark of 29:04.7 set by Jorge Torres of Colorado in 2002.

Chelanga was five seconds behind Rupp in a time of 29:08.0 to finish in second place and finished 17 seconds ahead of Andrew Ledwith of Iona in third place with a time of 29:25.4. David Kinsella of Portland was fourth in a time of 29:26.5 and Luke Puskedra of Oregon rounded out the top five with a time of 29:27.8 in fifth place.

The 2009 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships will once again be held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course located at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in Terre Haute, Ind. It will mark the sixth-straight time that the championships will be hosted by Indiana State and the seventh time in the last eight years.

German Fernandez injured at NCAA

STILLWATER, Okla. – A serious Achilles tendon injury to Oklahoma State men’s cross country standout German Fernandez with only 1,500 meters left in the race sent the second-ranked Cowboys from a probable top-three finish to an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships Monday in Terre Haute, Ind.

Fernandez, the 2008 Big 12 Individual Champion, joined teammates Ryan Vail and John Kosgei in moving up the pack throughout the race. The three had gotten up to the second wave of runners in the field when Fernandez injured his Achilles and went down. He did not finish the race.

“This was a tough break for us but this is how it goes sometimes,” Coach Dave Smith said. “Ryan, German and John did a great job of moving up the pack and were in a good position when the injury happened. It’s very disappointing, but that’s how it goes. We were looking at a very high finish – probably second or third – but injuries are part of the sport and we have to accept that.”

Kosgei and Vail both earned All-America honors by virtue of their finishes (Kosgei was seventh with a time of 29:33 and Vail was 18th with a time of 29:59). Oregon’s Galen Rupp won the individual title in 29:04 to lift the defending NCAA champion Ducks to their second-straight NCAA team title.

Smith said doctors will examine Fernandez when the team returns to Oklahoma to determine his status moving forward.

“German will need a lot of time off, but we won’t know how much time until the doctors look at him,” Smith said

Hasay named Youth Athlete of the Year

Monday, November 24, 2008

INDIANAPOLIS - National 1,500 meter high school record holder Jordan Hasay, of Arroyo Grande, Calif., has been named the 2008 Youth Athlete of the Year by USA Track & Field. Hasay will be honored on Saturday, December 6, at the Jesse Owens Awards and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. The event will be held at the Silver Legacy Resort in Reno, Nevada, in conjunction with USA Track & Field's 2008 Annual Meeting.

As the youngest competitor in the women's 1,500m at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field, Hasay broke the national high school record by running 4 minutes 14.50 seconds to place fifth in the semifinal and qualify for the final. Her performance broke the previous record of 4:16.42, held for just under three weeks by Christine Babcock, by nearly two seconds. Slated to leave almost immediately for the World Junior Championships in Poland, Hasay delayed her trip to run in the final, where she finished 10th in 4:17.36.

"I am honored to be recognized by USA Track & Field with this award," said Hasay. "I am thankful for everything that USATF does for the sport of running in our country and inspired by its outstanding dedication to its members. I'd also like to thank my family, coach, and community who always provide continued support to me. "

Hasay began her year by winning the USA Junior Cross Country Championships on February 16, in San Diego, Calif. She covered the 6 km course in 20:32 and was 13 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor.

At the 2008 USA Junior Track & Field Championships, Hasay repeated her performance from last year and won the women's 1,500m, outkicking Oregon's Alex Kosinksi (Eugene, Ore.) down the final stretch to win in 4:18.44. It was that performance that qualified her for the 2008 IAAF World Junior Championships.

On Friday, July 11, just one week removed from her national record-setting performance, Hasay competed in the first round of the women's 1,500m at the World Junior Championships. Taking fourth place in heat three of the prelims in 4:20.82, she qualified for the final on time. In the final, Hasay placed fourth, crossing the line in 4:19.02. It was the best ever finish for an American woman in the 1,500m at World Juniors.

Hasay dominated on the high school level as well. At the CIF Finals, she held off Davis Senior High School senior Laurynne Chetelat down the home stretch to win the 3,200m state title in a meet record 9:52.13, the second fastest 3,200m time ever run by a high school girl. On October 23, Track & Field News named Hasay the 2008 Girls High School Athlete of the Year.

"Jordan is a shining star for Team USA and for the USATF youth program," said USATF Youth Athletics Committee Chair Lionel Leach, noting that Hasay has long been a fixture at USATF's Youth and Junior Olympic events. "We are proud that she got her start in the USATF youth programs and will eagerly be watching her progress as she moves on to the collegiate and professional levels."

Rupp leads Oregon to second consecutive NCAA Team Title

News and Notes, Volume 8, Number 64

Rupp leads Oregon to second consecutive NCAA Team Title

2008 Olympian Galen Rupp (Portland, Ore.) out-dueled Samuel Chelanga of Liberty University to win his first NCAA individual title Monday at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. Running the 10 km course in 29:04, Rupp lead the University of Oregon to their second consecutive team title at the meet.

In cold, breezy conditions, Chelanga took the lead from the gun and led the field by five seconds at the mile, passing in 4:21. Rupp closed the gap and briefly ran alongside Chelanga, but the pair exchanged a few elbows before Chelanga surged to another five second lead. Rupp patiently made his way to rejoin Chelanga by 5 km.

Over the final loop of the course, Rupp was content to let Chelanga lead until the pair hit the final straight away. With about 400 meters to go, Rupp made his final push and pulled clear for the title.

"My coaches told me to sit back, be smart and stay focused," Rupp said. "It was going to come down to a sprint and I relaxed until I was ready to go. I was more patient than last year, and when I made my move it was decisive. With about 800m to go I heard someone say 'Remember last year,' and that helped me win."

On the women's side, Sally Kipyego of Texas Tech won her third consecutive individual title, running 19:29 over the women's 6 km course to become the winningest women's cross country runner in Division I history. Susan Kuijen of Florida State managed to stay within striking distance through half-way, but Kipyego easily pulled away for a six-second win. The University of Washington won the women's team title over Oregon with 79 points.

"It was cold and windy and the hardest of my three wins," Kipyego said. "I tried to stay positive and run my best race. It's an amazing feeling and a wonderful opportunity."

Adams State sweeps D-II Championships

Adams State College swept the national team titles while Scott Bauhs won the men's individual title Saturday at the NCAA Division II Men's Cross Country Championships at Cooper's Lake Campground in Slippery Rock, Pa.

2008 World XC team member Scott Bauhs of Chico State led the men's 10 km race from start to finish, cruising to the win in 30:23 with runner-up Aaron Braun of Adams State finishing 13 seconds back in 30:36. Bauhs is the Wildcats' first cross country national champion.

The Adams State men won over rival Western State by 21 points (67 points to 88) with Chico State (Calif.) finishing third with 120 points. Two-time defending champion Abilene Christian finished fourth with 128 points.

The Adams State women won their sixth straight and 14th overall NCAA Division II National title, finishing with 79 points, ahead of runner-up Grand Valley State (102) and third-place Western State (183).

Middlebury, Cortland win D-III titles

The SUNY Cortland men's cross country team won its first NCAA Division III title while the Middlebury College women's team picked up their fifth crown, outdistancing 32-team fields Saturday at the 2008 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships at the L.S. Ayers Complex in Hanover, Ind.

Middlebury ended the race with 179 points, 59 points ahead of second-place Calvin (237). Williams (240), Wartburg (284) and Wisconsin-Eau Claire (310) rounded out the top five. SUNY Cortland won the men's title with 80 points, while North Central of Illinois was second with 115 points and Williams College finished third with 129 points.

Hamilton College's Peter Kosgei, the 2007 runner-up, won the men's individual title, covering the 8 km course in a season best 24:22.03. He is the first cross country national champion in school history. Willy Kaul of Wisconsin-Oshkosh took runner-up honors, finishing in 24:32.67, and Wartburg's Brian Chenoweth was third in 24:34.04.

Bethel junior Marie Borner brought home the women's individual title, finishing the 6 km race in 20:43.91, more than nine seconds ahead of her nearest competitor and more than a minute faster than her performance at the national meet a year ago in Northfield, Minn. Amherst's Elise Tropiano was second in 20:52.96 and Wisconsin-Oshkosh's Ayla Mitchell was third in 21:02.91.

Azusa Pacific, Malone win NAIA titles

Azusa Pacific placed three runners in the top 10 to capture its first NAIA Women's Cross Country National Championship Saturday at Dr. Wayne E. Dannehl Cross Country Course in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Alissa McKaig of Indiana Tech captured the individual women's title after crossing the finish line in a meet record 16:41.4, breaking the old mark of 16:43 set by Emile Mondor of Simon Fraser (B.C.) in 2002. 2007 runner-up Jacky Kimwambok of Azusa Pacific was again second in 17:02.1 and Shorter's Justyna Mudy was third in 17:06.1.

Azusa Pacific senior Aron Rono won the men's individual race for the second straight year with a season-best 8 km time of 23:46, leading the Cougar men to their finest showing ever at the national meet, finishing second with 118 points. But it was #1 ranked Malone who successfully defended their title by winning the meet with 61 points, 57 points ahead of Azusa Pacific. Malone's Nikolaus Schweikert (24:03) finished second and Abednego Magut of Azusa Pacific was third in 24:31.3.

With its women's national championship and men's runner-up finish, Azusa Pacific won the NAIA team award for compiling the lowest combined score at 184 points (66 women, 118 men). Malone was second at 221 and Indiana Tech was third with 468.

Noelle R. Lopez (Santa Clara University) chosen as a Rhodes Scholar

WASHINGTON, DC/November 22, 2008 – Elliot F. Gerson, American Secretary of the
Rhodes Trust, today announced the names of the thirty-two American men and women
chosen as Rhodes Scholars. Rhodes Scholarships provide all expenses for two or three years of study at the University of Oxford in England, and may allow funding in some instances for four years. Mr. Gerson called the Rhodes Scholarships, "the oldest and best known award for international study, and arguably the most famous academic award available to American college graduates." They were created in 1902 by the Will of Cecil Rhodes, British philanthropist and African colonial pioneer. The first class of American Rhodes Scholars entered Oxford in 1904; those elected today will enter Oxford in October 2009.

Rhodes Scholars are chosen in a two-stage process. First, candidates must be endorsed by their college or university. Over 1500 students each year seek their institution’s endorsement; this year, 769 were endorsed by 207 different colleges and universities.

Committees of Selection in each of 16 districts then invite the strongest applicants to appear before them for interview. Gerson said, "applicants are chosen on the basis of the criteria set down in the Will of Cecil Rhodes. These criteria are high academic achievement, integrity of character, a spirit of unselfishness, respect for others, potential for leadership, and physical vigor. These basic characteristics are directed at fulfilling Mr. Rhodes’s hopes that the Rhodes Scholars would make an effective and positive contribution throughout the world. In Rhodes’ words, his Scholars should 'esteem the performance of public duties as their highest aim.'"

Applicants may apply either through the state where they are legally resident or where they have attended college for at least two years. The district committees met separately, on Friday and Saturday, November 21 and 22, in cities across the country. Each district committee made a final selection of two Rhodes Scholars from the candidates of the state or states within the district. Two-hundred nine applicants from 107 different colleges and universities reached the final stage of the competition, including a record 16 that had never before had a student win a Rhodes Scholarship. Gerson also reported, “in most years, we elect a winner from a college that had never before had a Rhodes Scholar. This year we are pleased to announce first-time winners from Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and from Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, California.” In addition, Gerson reported that, “Rhodes Scholars were also elected on Saturday from Virginia Military Institute and Drake University, the first Rhodes Scholars from these institutions in 42 and 82 years, respectively.”

The thirty-two Rhodes Scholars chosen from the United States will join an international group of Scholars chosen from thirteen other jurisdictions around the world. In addition to the thirty-two Americans, Scholars are also selected from Australia, Bermuda, Canada, the nations of the Commonwealth Caribbean, Germany, India, Jamaica, Kenya, New Zealand, Pakistan, Southern Africa (South Africa, plus Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia and Swaziland), Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Approximately 80 Scholars are selected worldwide each year.

With the elections announced today, 3,164 Americans have won Rhodes Scholarships,
representing 309 colleges and universities. Since 1976, women have been eligible to apply and 408 American women have now won the coveted scholarship. More than 1,800
American Rhodes Scholars are living in all parts of the U. S. and abroad. The value of the Rhodes Scholarship varies depending on the academic field and the degree (B.A., master’s, doctoral) chosen. The Rhodes Trust pays all college and university fees, provides a stipend to cover necessary expenses while in residence in Oxford as well as during vacations, and transportation to and from England. Mr. Gerson estimates that the total value of the Scholarship averages approximately US$50,000 per year.

DISTRICT 13
Arizona
Noelle R. Lopez, Tucson, is a senior at Santa Clara University, where she is majoring in philosophy. While compiling a near perfect academic record and winning many prizes for scholarship, she has been a leader in community service, with projects in Guatemala, Mexico, and rural California. Noelle is also an accomplished NCAA Division I cross-country runner, and was elected captain of the women’s track team. At Oxford, she plans to do the B.Phil. in philosophy.

Jesse Malkin (Berkeley High School, Berkeley, California 1987; Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio 1991), a cross country and track runner, was named a Rhodes Scholar in 1991. He is married to Michelle Malkin, a mother, wife, blogger, conservative syndicated columnist, author, and Fox News Channel contributor.

USTFCCCA Program of the Year Awards

The USTFCCCA is proud to announce four new awards that will start this weekend with the cross country championships. The four new awards are Program of the Year awards named after successful, longtime head coaches in both Division I and Division III.

The Program of the Year Award will be awarded annually to the most outstanding country/track & field program. The award will honor the institution that has achieved the most success in each academic year (spanning the cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field seasons) based on the institution’s finish at the NCAA Championships.

In order to be eligible for the award teams must qualify for the NCAA Championships. Scoring will be based on the team’s finish at each NCAA Championship in cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field (i.e. 1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points, 31st = 31 points) with the lowest total score for all three championships combined determining the award recipient.

NCAA D-I XC Champs set for Monday in Terre Haute

The 2008 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships will be hosted Monday for the sixth time by Indiana State University at the LaVern Gibson Cross Country course in Terre Haute, Ind. This year's races will be streamed live from 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. ET on CBS College Sports at http://all-access.cbssports.com/player.html?code=ncaa&media=92045.

On the men's side, 2008 Olympian Galen Rupp of the University of Oregon, who finished as the runner-up in 2007, is a pre-race favorite following his astonishing win last weekend at the NCAA West Regional Championships where he ran 27:41 on a course just shy of 10 km. With five All Americans and seven runners who have participated in the NCAA Championships in the past, the Oregon men are considered one of the favorites to the men's team title.

Challengers to Rupp include Liberty's Sam Chelanga, a third-year sophomore from Kenya via Farleigh Dickinson who is 5-0 this year, and Oklahoma State's German Fernandez, the 2008 Big 12 champion. Challenging Oregon for the team title should be Oklahoma State, Stanford and Wisconsin.

The dominant Sally Kipyego of Texas Tech looks to win her third consecutive title on the women's side. Kipyego is undefeated in cross country over her entire collegiate career. The Washington women are favored over Stanford to win the team title heading into competition on Monday. Five of the Huskies women competed in either the U.S. or Canadian Olympic Trials last summer and they placed five runners in the top seven at last week's West Regionals. Top teams to challenge Washington include Oregon, Florida State, Princeton and West Virginia.

Slippery Rock to host D-II XC Champs

Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania will host the 2008 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships, November 22, at Cooper's Lake Campground in Slippery Rock, Penn. The men's race will begin at noon Eastern Time followed by the women's race at 1:15.

The Abilene Christian men, currently ranked #2 in the country by USTFCCCCA, will look to win their third-straight team title while the #1 ranked Adams State women will be racing towards their sixth consecutive team crown. The Adams State men, ranked #1, and Harding will challenge for the team title on the men's side. For the women, #2 ranked Grand Valley State and #3 ranked Augustana (SD) will try to overtake Adams State.

NCAA DIII honors up for grabs in Hanover

New York University and Amherst College will look to defend their respective men's and women's team titles Saturday, November 22, at the 2008 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships at the L.S. Ayers Complex in Hanover, Ind. The men's race will begin at 11:00 a.m. Eastern Time followed by the women's race at noon.

Thirty-two teams were selected to participate in each championship. The top two, severn-person teams automatically qualified from each of the eight regions, for a total of 16 teams. Sixteen additional teams were selected at-large.

Cortland State is currently ranked first in the nation on the men's side while Middleburry leads the rankings for the women's teams.
