Seaman wins 11th title at USA Indoor Championships

BOSTON - The winners' podium at the 2009 USA Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday alternated multi-time champions with first-time winners at the Reggie Lewis Center. The final stop of USA Track & Field's Visa Championship Series, the meet will be broadcast Sunday from 5-7 p.m. ET on ESPN2.

Topping the list of recurring winners was Tim Seaman, who won a record 11th national indoor title in the men's 5,000m race walk to surpass the 10 victories of Hall of Famer Henry Laskau from 1948-57. The lifelong New York AC athlete easily won Saturday in 19 minutes 59.06 seconds as Patrick Stroupe was second (20:32.26) and Michael Tarantino third (21:19.78). It was the 35th overall career national crown for Seaman, who competes indoors and outdoors at all distances from the 1 mile on the track through 50 km on the roads.

Jillian Camarena won her fifth consecutive title in the women's shot put with a toss of 18.59 meters/61 feet 0 inches. Liz Wanless was second (18.18m /59-07.75) and Karen Shump third (17.26m/56-07.50). In the 76-year history of the event at the USA Indoor Championships only Rena McDonald has won more consecutive titles than Camarena, winning six straight from 1929-1934. (The women's shot was not contested for a total of seven years in the 1930s and '40s).

Amy Acuff won her fifth national indoor title in the women's high jump, topping the competition with a leap of 1.90m/6-2.75, ahead of Dierdre Mullen in second and Sharon Day in third, both at 1.85m/6-0.75.

Middle-distance finals

Among three middle-distance event finals on the track Saturday night, the men's 1500m produced the lone repeat winner. In a race that featured the last three indoor national champions - Rob Myers, Alan Webb and Chris Lukezic - it came down to a two-man sprint between Myers and Webb. At the bell lap, Myers sprinted to the lead, but in the final stretch, Webb made a run at the 2004 and '08 champ. Myers held off Webb, winning in 3:45.73 as Webb was second in 3:45.82. Steve Sherer was third in 3:46.14.

With marathon specialist Josh Rohatinsky setting the early pace in the men's 3,000m, David Torrence and Brandon Bethke sprinted away in the final lap. A sub-4:00 miler while at Cal, a jubilant Torrence finished in 7:53.67 to win his first national title of any kind, with Bethke second in 7:54.20 and three-time champion Jonathon Riley third in 7:55.79.

The women's 3,000 also featured a first-time winner. Three-time Olympian Jennifer Rhines provided early leading duties before Olympic 10,000m runner Amy Yoder Begley took over in the final laps. After the bell, 1500m specialist Sarah Hall attempted to sprint past the Alberto Salazar-trained Begley, but Begley's strength won out. She finished in 8:53.27 to Hall's 8:53.72, with Julie Culley third in 8:55.62.

Manson repeats in HJ

A battle between a trio of 2008 Olympians was expected in the men's high jump, and so it came to be. Andra Manson, Jesse Williams and Dusty Jonas were the class of the field, with Manson repeating as national indoor champion with a clearance of 2.32m/7-7.25. Williams finished second at 2.29m/7-6, and Jonas third at 2.26/7-5.

Jeremy Scott, the 2003 USA indoor runner-up, added the title of 2009 national champion to his calling card. Known also as the world's tallest pole vaulter at 6-9, Scott cleared 5.60m/18-4.5 on his first attempt to easily win the competition. Brian Mondschein was second at 5.50m/18-0.5, and Darren Niedermeyer was third at 5.40m/17-8.5.

Shakeema Welsch won her second straight title in the women's triple jump with a leap of 13.77m/45-2.25, with Crystal Manning second with 13.76m/45-1.75 and Erica McLain third with 13.6m/44-10.75. Randall Flimmons won the men's long jump with a best mark of 7.79m/25-6.75, with Matthew Turner second with 7.77m/25-6 and Dexter Adams third with 7.73m/25-4.5.
In Saturday's qualifying rounds, three-time champion Khadevis Robinson was the fastest qualifier in the men's 800 with a time of 1:49.95; Katie Waits was the fastest woman with 2:05.35. Dominique Darden was fastest in the women's 400 rounds (53.50), and Jamaal Torrence was fastest male (47.16).

Winners of exhibition races included the Massachusetts girls in the girls' high school 4x400m relay in 3:54.20, Connecticut in the boys' high school 4x400 (3:16.67), and the Cambridge Jets in both the girls' (1:51.55) and boys' (1:44.55) 4x200m youth relays. SEATTLE - Junior Jake Schmitt and the women's distance medley relay team both won conference titles for the Huskies today during day one of the MPSF Track and Field Championships at the Dempsey Indoor.

Schmitt captured the 5,000-meters in 13-minutes and 57.49 seconds, scoring 10 points for UW's 22nd-ranked men's team, which sits in second place overall after day one with 25 points. 11th-ranked Arizona State currently leads with 28 points, and Cal State Northridge is third with 24 followed by No. 1 Oregon and No. 25 Stanford which are tied for fourth with 20.5 points.

Schmitt is the first Husky to win the 5k since Jason Fayant in 2001. The men's DMR, comprised of Joey Bywater, Jeff Gudaitis, Ryan Soberanis, and Austin Abbott, also added eight points by finishing second in 9:36.21. That time ranks fifth in the NCAA this year and is the fourth-fastest in school history.

On the women's side, the 21st-ranked Huskies are fifth with 25.5 points. Ten of those points came from the DMR, which did its male counterparts one better by winning the first MPSF distance medley relay title in school history. Freshman Christine Babcock opened up a big lead for the Dawgs after the opening 1200-meter leg, then handed off to Falesha Ankton, who kept the Huskies ahead during her 400-meters. Junior Katie Follett took the baton for 800-meters, and widened UW's lead over second-place Stanford. Finally, junior Kailey Campbell took over for the 1600m anchor leg, and led the Huskies to an easy win in 11:16.57. Stanford was six seconds back at 11:22.70.

The women also picked up 4.5 points in the pole vault, as senior Lara Jones, a transfer from Duke, set a new personal-best with a clearance of 13-feet, 5 ¼ inches that tied for the second-best clearance by any vaulter but was fifth based on the tiebreak. Senior Andrea Peterson also PR'd, clearing 13-1 ½ to take eighth in the always loaded field. Jones and Peterson became the sixth and seventh vaulters in school history to clear 13-feet indoors.

"We really had a terrific start to the meet," said head coach Greg Metcalf. "There were major PR's all over the place today. Both of our DMR's ran outstanding, smart races and we hope that our men's group will now be joining the women at NCAA's with the time they ran today. And Jake Schmitt, any time you win a title at any distance in this conference it's special, so I'm happy for him. It was also great to see Lara and Andrea both clear 13-feet within minutes of each other like that. Tomorrow should be very exciting."

The women also got strong showings from senior Daria Amiad-Pavlov, who placed fifth in the pentathlon with an NCAA Provisional score of 3,853, and sophomore Elisa Bryant, who was third in the weight throw with a best toss of 62-feet, 1-inch.

The 25th-ranked Stanford women lead with 56 points followed by 8th-ranked Arizona State and 3rd-ranked Oregon which are tied for second with 47. Cal is in fourth with 28 points just ahead of Washington.

Also scoring for the men was junior Zack Midles who took fifth in the weight throw, and junior Kenjamine Jackson, who placed sixth in the 200-meter dash. Freshman Jeremy Taiwo leads the men's heptathlon after four events, having won the long jump and tied for the win in the high jump as well.

Action resumes Saturday morning at 11 a.m., with conference champs crowned in the majority of the sprints and distance events, plus high and triple jumps, the shot put, and men's pole vault. The men's and women's 4x400m relays bring the meet to a close at around 3:30 p.m.

Updated Men's Indoor Records

Seattle, Wash. - The Stanford women took the early lead at the MPSF Championships on Friday from Dempsey Indoor Stadium on the campus of the University of Washington. The Stanford women totaled 56 points to take a nine point lead on Arizona State heading into the final day of competition on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Stanford men are in the thick of a close competition, sitting in fourth with 20.5 points, but just 7.5 points out of the lead.

The women had a banner day with two school records being set and a MPSF title for Kate Niehaus.

Niehaus took the MPSF title in the 5,000 meters with a career-best time of 16:22.34. The time was a NCAA provisional standard for Niehaus who captured her first indivual conference title for the Stanford. Also faring well in the 5,000 was Emilie Amaro who finished fifth with a time of 16:35.32. Her time was also a personal best and a NCAA provisional standard.

The busiest athlete of the day was Whitney Liehr who set the school record in the pentathlon with a score of 4,012. She became the first person in Stanford history to total over 4,000 points on her way to a second place finish. The score was just short of the NCAA automatic standard, but was easily a provisional standard. Liehr's best event came in the long jump where she reached a career best of 20-1 ½. She also competed in the open 60-meter hurdles where her time of 8.66 seconds qualified for Saturday's finals.

The other school record came from Katerina Stefanidi in the pole vault. Stefanidi cleared a height of 13-5 ¼ to claim second place, while capturing the school record.

More big points for Stanford came in the distance medley relay where the Cardinal women finished second. The team of Madeline Duhon, Joy O'Hare, Claire Cormier Thielke and Laurynne Chetelat finished with a time of 11:22.70 to claim eight big points for Stanford.

The Stanford women also scored big points in the long jump where they placed three in the top eight. Arantxa King led the Stanford women with a leap of 19-11 ¾ to place third. Also scoring were Brittni Dixon-Smith (19-9) who placed fifth and Griffin Matthew (19-4) who finished seventh.

Matthew also had a busy day in the sprints. In the 60 meters she qualified for tomorrow's final with a time of 7.60 seconds. In addition, she finished seventh in the 200 meters with a time of 24.64.

Myles Bradley

The men were led by Myles Bradley who finished tied for third in the long jump. Bradley recorded a career-best leap of 24-7 ¼, which was a NCAA provisional mark and moved him into third on the all-time Stanford list. However, the long jump was not the most impressive mark of the day for Bradley. He also competed in the 60-meter hurdles where he set stadium record of 7.77 seconds to advance to tomorrow's final as the No. 1 qualifier.

J.J. Jackson also competed in the hurdles and advanced to the final with a time of 8.14 seconds, which was the fifth fastest time of the day.

The 5,000 meters also provided good results for the Cardinal, led by Jacob Riley. Riley finished fourth with a time of 14:04.03. Just behind him was Brendan Gregg who finished sixth with a time of 14:07.45 established a career best and a NCAA provisional standard.

The other event with multiple scorers for the Stanford men was the weight throw. Kyle Davis-Hammerquist (62-0 ½) finished seventh, while Carter Wells (60-3 ¼) finished eighth.

The final points of the evening for Stanford came in the distance medley relay where the Cardinal finished fifth. The team of Justin Marpole-Bird, Amaechi Morton, Dylan Ferris and Elliott Heath finished with a time of 9:49.49.

Saturday will mark the conclusion of the 2009 MPSF Championships. Both the Stanford men's and women's teams remain in contention for a conference title. The women will look to extend their lead, while the men will look to gain ground on a tightly bunched group of competitors.

SEATTLE - California's men's distance medley relay ran an NCAA automatic qualifying time, set a school record and set a meet record by winning the race in 9:29.71 on Friday at the MPSF Indoor Championships at Washington's Dempsey Indoor Facility. The quartet of senior Mark Matusak, senior Jake Hanson, freshman Sebastian Sam and junior Michael Coe broke the school mark of 9:33.77 Cal set in the 2007 NCAA Indoor championships. The Cal women stand in fourth place and the Bears men stand 10th after the first day of the conference meet.

"That was the third-fastest time behind Arkansas [9:28.35] and Oregon [9:29.39] right now," Cal head coach Tony Sandoval said. "Any other year, that would be the nation's leading time, and we would be the preeminent favorite to win the event [at the NCAA Indoor Championships]. Not this year. Nevertheless, we're excited to run so fast and that we're going to NCAAs."

The Bears also hit NCAA provisional qualifiers in the women's 60-meter dash preliminaries, with sophomore Cherrelle Garrett tying her season-best time of 7.34, the women's 5000-meter run, with sophomore Alison Greggor running a 16:30.56 to place fourth, and the women's pole vault, with sophomore Allison Stokke posting a mark of 4.00 meters (13-1.50) to tie for seventh place. Garrett ran the fastest 60-meter time and qualified for tomorrow's final.

"The first day doesn't mean a lot as far as standings," Sandoval said. "We have a lot of stronger events coming tomorrow, but we did have some surprising performances. Alison Greggor ran a provisional time in the 5000. That was phenomenal. The women's DMR ran very well in third place. We looked pretty good in Kyle Mills-Bunje and Kevin Kuechler in the multis. And Allison Stokke jumped well in the pole vault."

Cal's women's DMR, which consisted of redshirt freshman Taylor Bryson, sophomore Kayla Dixon, senior Francesca Weems and freshman Deborah Maier, ran a time of 11:41.10 for third.

After four events in the men's heptathlon, Mills-Bunje stands in fourth place with 2948 points. Kuechler, a redshirt freshman, is eighth with 2719 points.

The final day of the MPSF Indoor Championships begins Saturday at 11 a.m. with the men's heptathlon 60-meter hurdles, women's triple jump final, men's high jump final and women's shot put final.

Another female coach sues Fresno St. for bias

Ramona Pagel

Ramona Pagel

Position:
Assistant Coach

Experience:
3rd Season

Ramona Pagel begins her third season as an assistant coach with the Bulldogs, overseeing the men's and women's throwers.

Pagel's impact has been obvious. Since taking the reigns of the Fresno State throwers, Pagel has guided 13 athletes to the NCAA Regional Meet. Her athletes also accounted for two of the team's three conference championships last season. Thrower Dave Endler won Fresno State's first-ever WAC championship in the discus. Mallory Webb championed the javelin at the WAC Championships before going on to take sixth at the NCAA National Meet for her third All-American honor.

Pagel arrived at Fresno State after spending the previous three seasons as an assistant coach for the track and field and cross country programs at Southeastern Louisiana. While at SLU, she supervised the throwers and assisted in all day-to-day aspects of the track and field and cross country programs. Pagel served as a mentor to Chris Carter, who became the first student-athlete in eight years to earn All-America honors with a mark of 72.11m in the javelin. She also served as an assistant coach at Radford after a four-year stay at Kent State as the assistant to associate athletic director for facilities and operations.

In addition her coaching background, Pagel has enjoyed success at all levels. A four-time Olympian ('84, '88, '92, '96), Pagel was a gold medalist at the 1987 Pan Am Games and is the American record holder in the shot put with a distance of 66-2.50. She has also experienced success at the collegiate level, as she was a seven-time All-American and 1984 NCAA Outdoor champion in the shot put. Pagel has also been involved in various capacities with USA Track and Field and the United States Olympic Committee. Addtionally, Pagel was named to the coaching staff of the World Indoor Championships.

Pagel obtained her bachelor's degree in physical education with an emphasis in sports medicine from San Diego State in 1985. She later earned an M.A. in athletic administration from Kent State in 1998.

Leading the way are All-American hurdler Shalina Clarke and defending NCAA hammer throw champion Eva Orban. Another top-notch thrower back for her second season is javelin specialist Kristine Busa, who posted the second-farthest throw in school history last year. USC's dynamic heptathlon duo of Shana Woods and Nia Ali are expected to challenge the school's all-time heptathlon score as well as be key performers in the sprints, jumps and relays. A key for the Trojan distance corps is Zsofia Erdelyi who set the USC steeplechase record and placed 9th at the NCAA Championships last year as a freshman. In addition, All-American Brysun Stately returns to competition after sitting out last season after transferring back to USC from Nebraska. Add to this the No. 3 ranked recruiting class and the Women of Troy are looking for a special season.

Indoor Track And Field Ready For MPSF Championships
The Stanford track and field teams will compete in the MPSF Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend from Dempsey Indoor Stadium on the campus of the University of Washington. Both the men's and women's teams are currently ranked No. 25 in the country and will be sending 27 athletes to compete in various events. The action begins Friday, Feb. 27 and continues until Saturday, Feb. 28.

Last season the women finished second at the MPSF Championships, while the men finished third. The women just missed the title finishing with 141 points, just short of the eventual NCAA Champion Arizona State who finished with 154.5. The men finished with 83 points, trailing Oregon with 90 and California with 84.5. Both the men and women also had four individual MPSF Champions last season.

More Top Marks For Stanford At The Husky Invitational
The Stanford women were led by Lauren Centrowitz who ran a personal best and NCAA automatic standard of 4:37.07 in winning the mile. Already an automatic NCAA qualifier in the 3,000 meters and the distance medley relay, Centrowitz added a third event. The time was also the second fastest indoors in Stanford history. In the same race, Alicia Follmar added a personal best and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:40.23. In a previous heat, freshman Laurynne Chetelat ran a time of 4:42.25 to also achieve the provisional standard. Both times were top-10 all-time for Stanford.

On the men's side, the Cardinal were led by Elliott Heath in the 3,000 meters. Heath achieved the NCAA automatic standard with a time of 7:53.64. In the process he moved to fourth on the Stanford all-time list. In the 400 meters, Stanford freshman Amaechi Morton tied the school record with a time of 46.88. The time was also a NCAA provisional standard.

Stanford Impresses at UW Invitational
Stanford freshman Chris Derrick led Stanford to a number of impressive performances at the UW Invitational. The Cardinal newcomer won the 5,000 meters with a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 13:44.02. The time was the third fastest in Stanford history and the fastest ever by a Stanford freshman. Also performing well was Ryan Fisicaro who broke the school record in the 60 meters. His time of 6.82 seconds was faster than the previous record held by Wopamo Osaisai.

The women were led by distance stars Lauren Centrowitz and Alicia Follmar. In the 3,000 meters, the pair of Stanford seniors finished second and third overall. Centrowitz placed second with a time of 9:10.99, while Follmar was third with a time of 9:14.98. Both were NCAA automatic Standards a night after the duo teamed with Maria Lattanzi and Idara Otu in the distance medley relay, which also achieved the automatic Standard with a time of 11:07.53

Myles Bradley Leads Stanford In New Mexico
Myles Bradley led Stanford with an outstanding performance in the 60-meter hurdles. At the Cherry and Silver Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Bradley improved his own school record in the event with a time of 7.73. Bradley actually ran 7.71, but the time was adjusted due to the altitude in Albuquerque. The time was not only the Stanford record, but improved his NCAA provisional standard, which currently places him first in the MPSF and third in the nation in the event. Other standouts from the meet for the men came in the 4x400-meter relay. The team of Spencer Castro, Zach Chandy, Durell Coleman and Amaechi Morton finished first with a time of 3:14.04. The freshman Morton also doubled back in the open 400 meters to finish fourth with a time of 47.86 seconds.

On the women's side, they were led by a third place finish in the shot put by Michaela Wallerstedt. Wallerstedt finished with a toss of 47-10 ½. In the 60 meters, Shataya Hendricks returned after missing most of 2008 with an injury and finished fourth with a time of 7.56 seconds. Hendricks also competed in the 200 meters where she finished with a time of 26.42.

Stanford Opens At UW Indoor Preview
The Cardinal got their season underway at the UW Indoor Preview. A small group of athletes competed with the highlights coming from a pair of NCAA provisional times by the men's team. Myles Bradley won the 60-meter hurdles with a NCAA provisional time of 7.85. Also with a NCAA provisional mark was Casey Roche who won the pole vault with a height of 17-1. The other event winner was Ryan Fisicaro in the 60 meters with a time of 6.85. On the women's side Brittni Dixon-Smith led the way by finishing third in the long jump with a leap of 19-8 3/4 and fourth in the 60 meters with a time of 7.75.

Returning All-Americans
The women begin the season ranked No. 17 in the nation by the USTFCCCA. The Cardinal returns three All-Americans for the indoor season. Alicia Follmar leads the Cardinal after earning two All-America honors last season at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Follmar helped the distance medley relay team to a third-place finish as well as placing 10th in the mile. Also earning an All-America honor as a member of that DMR team was Idara Otu. Finally, Alexandra Gits picked up her first All-America honor outdoors in the 10,000 meters where she finished third. Gits also has significant experience indoors where she was the MPSF Champion at 5,000 meters.

The men's team enters the 2009 indoor season ranked No. 25 by the USTFCCCA. A total of seven men who have earned All-America honors at Stanford will be back for the outdoor season, but just four have eligibility remaining indoors. A pair of 400-meter runners who earned their All-America honors as members of the distance medley relay return. Andrew Dargie is coming off an impressive 2008 freshman season where he was a member of the DMR team that finished fourth at the NCAA Indoor Championships, in addition to qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the open 400 meters. Chandy earned his All-America honor as a member of the DMR in 2007. Senior Hari Mix, a distance specialist, looks to regain his 2007 form when he was an All-American outdoors at 5,000 meters. Finally, freshman Chris Derrick burst onto the college scene during the cross country season and should be extremely competitive at the long distances. Derrick finished seventh overall at the NCAA Cross Country Championships to earn the first All-America honor of his young career.

Other Impact Returners
The Cardinal women have several other impact returners including 2008 Olympian Arantxa King. King competed for Bermuda in Beijing and was also a key contributor for Stanford last season as she qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the long jump. Also excelling in the long jump was Griffin Matthew, who returns after being one of two Stanford athletes to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in two events. She qualified in the 100 meters as well as the long jump. Lauren Stewart, the school record holder in the pentathlon, returns for her senior season where she will look to defend her MPSF title and advance to the NCAA's. A pair of throwers return after qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships last season. Jaynie Goodbody (hammer) should be a threat in the weight throw, while Michaela Wallerstedt (shot put) looks to match her outdoor success indoors.

Men's impact returners for Stanford include hurdler Myles Bradley and a trio of sophomore distance runners, Brendan Gregg, Elliott Heath and Jacob Riley. Bradley set school records in both the 60-meter hurdles (7.78) and the 110-meter hurdles (13.78) during the 2008 season and qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships. He will look to earn his first All-America honor during the upcoming indoor season. The trio of sophomore distance runners showed promise during their freshmen track seasons, but made up a big portion of the 2008 cross country team that finished third in the nation. Gregg, Heath and Riley teamed with Derrick and seniors Hakon DeVries and Garrett Heath, who will be back for the outdoor season, to make up a cross country squad that looked a lot like some of the dominating teams of the Stanford past.

Top Newcomers
In addition to the deep group of returners, Stanford has several freshmen ready to contribute right away. Laurynne Chetelat proved she is ready for a successful collegiate career after an outstanding cross country season where she was Stanford's No. 1 runner in all but one race. She should be a threat immediately on the track in the distances. Former world youth record holder Katerina Stefanidi looks to make an immediate impact in the pole vault.

Joining Derrick as a potential freshmen that could contribute right away are Geoffrey Tabor and Amaechi Morton. Tabor is the 2008 junior national champion in the discus and Morton was the USATF national runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles.
