Grand Canyon Women Reclaim No. 1 in DII Rankings

April 30, 2013

NEW ORLEANS – After a week’s absence the Grand Canyon women are back at the top of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II National Team Computer Rankings, while the men’s race is becoming more congested.

A strong weekend performance at the PacWest Championships earned the Grand Canyon women a team trophy and the No. 1 spot in the rankings after falling to No. 2 last week. Meanwhile, their male teammates used the PacWest Championships to pull themselves into the race for the top few spots after both No. 1 Saint Augustine’s and No. 2 Adams State slipped.

The National Team Computer Rankings are a projection of how teams could fare at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. This is the first week that does not feature marks from 2012, except for combined events. An explanation of the rankings system can be found here.

Grand Canyon Women Reclaim No. 1 Position

The Antelopes had an exceptional weekend in claiming the PacWest Outdoor team championship title, recording 12 performances that improved upon their season’s bests entering the weekend, and as a result gained a top-25-best 29.16 net points for a team score of 244.84. Driving the Antelopes’ surge to the top was 200 meter runners Shavine Hodge (No. 3, 23.51) and Petra Fanty (No. 6, 23.61), as well as triple jumper Jessica Yates (No. 6, 41-1/12.52m).

As Grand Canyon surged to reclaim No. 1, Lincoln (Mo.) slipped to No. 2 with a 5.83 net loss to 224.13.

Indoor champion Academy of Art made small gains at No. 3, inching up 3.52 net points to 213.78 and drawing ever nearer the top two positions — potentially positioning itself for a late-season run to the top as was the case in the indoor season.

Defending outdoor champion Grand Valley State remained stationary and in the hunt at No. 4 despite a 6.13 net loss to 202.44. Adams State rounded out the top five at 150.80 after a 12.79 net loss.

Top Four Men’s Teams Beginning to Bunch Up

Though each the top five teams remained stationary in terms of rank, No. 1 Saint Augustine’s and No. 2 Adams State came back to the pack while No. 3 Grand Canyon and No. 4 Ashland both made significant gains on the team score front.

Indoor champ Saint Augustine’s suffered the biggest team points drop-off of any top-25 team, sliding 20.92 net points for a 254.28, while defending outdoor champion Adams State checked in at 246.42 after a 14.04 point net loss.

Following a PacWest Championship, Grand Canyon jumped up 15.08 net points to 213.93. National Athlete of the Week Fred Taylor had a lot to do with the increase, moving to No. 1 at 200 meters (20.75) and No. 2 at 100 (10.23), while triple jumper Kevin Lashley leapt 10 spots to No. 5 (50-4½/15.35m).

It was Ashland, however, that recorded the biggest gains this weekend, improving 21.4 net points — most of any top-25 team — to 197.12. The squad recorded five new top-10 performances and 11 total season’s best marks at its home meet this past weekend.

Findlay rounded out the top five at 130.11 following a 7.1 net loss.

Big Sky, NAU 5K Records Fall with Estrada's Career Night

PALO ALTO, Calif. – As if Diego Estrada hadn't done enough in his storied career with the Northern Arizona University track and field and cross country programs, the senior Olympian and nine-time All-American put up the best 5,000-meter race of his life Sunday night in Palo Alto, breaking the Big Sky Conference and NAU records in the process with an NCAA-leading time of 13:15.33.

"What a fantastic race it was for Diego tonight," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Eric Heins. "For him to have a shot to win the thing in such a star-studded field was phenomenal. He's been working a lot this year on his finishing kick, and he did a great job moving up steadily through the race and to finish as the top collegian, even though he took third overall."

Estrada shattered former teammate David McNeill's school and conference 5,000-meter record time of 13:25.63, set three years ago at the very same track. Estrada now holds two of the top three times in NAU history in the event.

Section one of the men's 5,000 meters, Estrada's section, was hotly anticipated by fans and athletes alike, and the show didn't disappoint. The race was a who's who of high-caliber talent that included two-time NCAA champion Sam Chelanga, formerly of Liberty University, American 1,500-meter record holder Alan Webb, American 10,000-meter record holder Chris Solinsky, Evan Jager, the sixth-place finisher in the steeplechase at the 2012 London Olympics, and World Cross Country Championship sixth-place finisher Ben True.

Estrada finished ahead of everyone except Jager and True, barely beating 2011 NCAA 5,000-meter champion Leonard Korir and former All-American Hassan Mead at the line after an outstanding strong final lap.

"I think Diego took a big step forward tonight in establishing himself as a world-class runner," Heins said. "Competing in the Olympics last summer was just the beginning for him, and now he's taking the right steps toward finishing out his collegiate career on a high note and moving on to what should be great success as a professional runner."

Estrada, who prior to the 2013 season was known for leading the pack throughout most every race in which he competed, decided to change his tactics in his final collegiate season. His pair of All-America awards, career-high finishes in the 5,000 (second) and 3,000 (fourth) meters, from NCAA Indoors in March are proof that the switch is working.

Estrada's successful race strategy showed again Sunday night. He began the race hanging toward the back of the pack, but slowly crept forward until a group of runners broke out in front around the 2,500-meter mark. Estrada hung at the back of the lead group for the next couple of laps before beginning his ascent once again.

With three laps to go, Estrada was hanging around 10th place, waiting until there were 800 meters to go to make his move.

Estrada began to pass runner after runner, eventually getting to fifth place as the bell sounded for the final lap. Estrada's finishing burst of speed, quickly becoming his signature in big races, allowed him to overcome Korir and Mead and take third place.

Estrada's time in the 5,000 meters currently leads the country and is just seven seconds shy of Henry Rono's 35-year-old American collegiate record (13:08.4). He adds his stellar Sunday performance to a 10,000-meter time (28:52.73) and 1,500-meter time (3:41.90) that sat third and 12th, respectively, on the national rankings prior to the weekend's competition.

Incidentally, Estrada wasn't the only Lumberjack to break a school record this weekend either. Junior Lauren Stuart smashed her own record in the hammer throw Saturday in Tempe, Ariz. with a mark of 201 feet 8 inches, making the two days of competition a resounding success for the talented NAU men's and women's teams.

Both track and field squads are off next weekend in preparation for the Big Sky Outdoor Championships May 8-11. Hosted by Portland State, the conference championship meet is being held at Pacific University.

Texas A&M Women Build Upon D1 Rankings Lead, While Men's Race Tightens

April 30, 2013

NEW ORLEANS – Both the Texas A&M men and women made gains in the most recent U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I National Team Computer Rankings, with the women extending their lead at the top of the list and the men moving closer to regaining the No. 1 spot.

The Aggies used strong performances at the Penn Relays to bolster their respective positions in the rankings, while their closest competitors both lost ground. The No. 1 defending champion Florida men are still No. 1, but their lead over Texas A&M has slipped from nearly 40 team points to less than 20, while the Aggie women were able to grow their lead to nearly 50 team points.

The National Team Computer Rankings are a projection of how teams could fare at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. This is the first week that does not feature marks from 2012, except for combined events. An explanation of the rankings system can be found here.

Texas A&M Men Gaining on Defending Champion Florida

After finding themselves No. 2 by more than 40 team points last week following the removal of preseason data from the rankings system, the No. 2 Aggies are back in the hunt for the No. 1 ranking after a weekend at the Penn Relays and Bobcat Classic that resulted in a 13.4 net increase in their team score to 322.98.

Meanwhile the No. 1 Gators were only able to record two performances that improved event rankings positioning, causing the defending champs to slide 10.83 points to 341.84 — reducing the gap between the SEC foes to fewer than 20 points.

Florida State was the biggest mover in this week’s top five, gaining 14.86 net points for a 249.47 team score and moving up two spots to No. 3 behind freshman Zak Seddon’s No. 2 steeplechase performance at the Payton Jordan (8:34.42) and senior Michael Fout’s No. 5 10,000 meters race (28:52.77).

Indoor champion Arkansas and Oregon were both jumped by Florida State, resulting in the Razorbacks (246.96) dropping to No. 4 and the Ducks (232.59) to No. 5.

Texas A&M Women Build On Lead at No. 1

The Texas A&M women claimed the No. 1 spot from Kansas last week, and they started to pull away from the Jayhawks this week. Behind the fourth-best long jump in the country from freshman LaQue Moen-Davis with a 21-1½w (6.46m, 3.3m/s) at the Penn Relays, the Aggies increased their team score 15.99 team points to 320.94.

The Jayhawks, who were not fully in competition this past weekend, slid 16.36 net points to 274.14.

Making the biggest move in the women’s top five this week were the Florida women, who turned in a number of great showings at the Arkansas Spring and Stanford Payton Jordan invitationals to jump three spots to No. 2 with a 45.07 net gain for a 263.83 team score. The distance crew provided the biggest push, with junior 1500 runners Cory McGee and Agata Strausa moving to No. 2 (4:10.55) and No. 4 (4:11.27), respectively.

LSU remained steady at No. 4 after not recording a time or mark that improved on any of its student-athlete’s top-ranked performances, resulting in a 14.14 net loss for a 243.44 team score.

Arizona rounded out the top five after slipping two spots and falling 22.52 net points to 238.28.
