Kipsang and Deba to Challenge Defending Champions at 2014 TCS New York City Marathon

NEW YORK - An extraordinary contingent of decorated marathoners from around the world, featuring world record-holder Wilson Kipsang of Kenya and Bronx resident and two-time New York City Marathon runner-up Buzunesh Deba of Ethiopia, will compete in a race for the ages at the 2014 TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 2, 2014, it was announced by Mary Wittenberg, president and CEO of New York Road Runners.

Kipsang, in his first New York City Marathon appearance, will line up against three former New York City Marathon champions-previously announced course record-holder Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya (2011, 2013), Gebre Gebremariam of Ethiopia (2010), and
previously announced American Meb Keflezighi (2009). Deba will defend her home turf against four former New York City Marathon champions- Priscah Jeptoo of Kenya (2013),
Firehiwot Dado of Ethiopia (2011), Edna Kiplagat of Kenya (2010), and Jelena Prokopcuka of Latvia (2005, 2006).

"This year's international field of past New York City Marathon champions, record-setters, and global championship medalists echoes the aspirational spirit of the TCS New York City Marathon-bringing the world together to celebrate the diversity of New York City and strive to achieve something bigger than ourselves-a global running community," said Wittenberg. "We're proud to welcome Wilson, a world-renowned marathon icon; Buzunesh, the ultimate running ambassador for our City; and an unparalleled field to "get their New York on" with every stride they take through the City's five boroughs, as they lead runners from Staten Island to Central Park."

Big Sur Marathon Awards Community Grants

MONTEREY, Calif. - The Big Sur International Marathon fulfilled its charter of "giving back to the community" by awarding $230,000 in individual grants to 82 non-profit organizations, charities and schools at a special reception last week.

Representatives from the Big Sur community traveled to Monterey to accept checks on behalf of several health, safety and education groups while dozens of other organizations from throughout the Monterey Peninsula were awarded grant funding based on their level of service to the 30-year old non-profit organization.

In addition to supporting local groups, the marathon is also a vehicle to assist charitable organizations in their own fund raising efforts. Individuals sign up to run the Big Sur race while obtaining sponsors for their cause. Collectively, 11 organizations from outside the county raised more than $250,000 for such organizations as Lazarex Cancer Foundation, Doctors Without Borders, Children of Peru, the Boomer Esaison Foundation and others.

Simpson Delivers, McNamara Surprises on Fifth Avenue

NEW YORK (Sept. 13, 2014) - Jenny Simpson had all the momentum- and the pressure - when she lined up for the 2014 NYRR Fifth Avenue Mile. She's the reigning Diamond League 1500-meter champion and the second-fastest American ever at that distance, and she'd be defending her 2013 Fifth Avenue title. But with 2012 race champion and U.S. Olympian
Brenda Martinez, hometown favorite
Mary Cain, and 15 more world-class women in the field who'd be keying off Simpson, the race looked ripe for an upset.

Simpson didn't flinch. At the starting horn, she went straight to the front. A phalanx followed closely-until 200 meters to go, when Simpson built a three-meter lead. It looked like a wire-to-wire win, until Martinez' fierce sprint brought her to Simpson's shoulder. She got no further, and Simpson crossed the line in 4:19.4-the sixth-fastest time in the race's 34 runnings-to hold off Martinez by two-tenths of a second and become the first three-time women's winner in the event's history. Newcomer
Ciara Mageean of Ireland took third in 4:21.2.
