Defending Champs Huddle and Braun Return to .US National 12K

INDIANAPOLIS -- 2013 .US National 12K champions Molly Huddle (Providence, Rhode Island) and Aaron Braun (Ft. Collins, Colo.) are back for more, as both athletes have confirmed their participation in the 2014 .US National 12K on Sunday, November 16 in Alexandria, Virginia.

The .US National 12K is the season-capping race to the USA Running Circuit (USARC), a series of races that annually provides nearly $1 million in prize money to American runners. Elite athletes will vie for a combined $100,000 in prize money in Alexandria.

2013 was the inaugural .US race, which saw Huddle set a new world best over 12K in 37 minutes, 50 seconds. Since then, the 2012 Olympian has dominated both the track and the roads, and currently carries a USARC winning streak of six races (3/15/12) into the .US National 12K. Huddle is the American record holder over 5,000 meters, finishing in 14:42.64 at the Diamond League meeting in Monaco this year. She won the New York Mini 10K in 31:37, setting an American record for an all-women's road 10K and becoming the first American Mini champion since Deena Kastor in 2004.

Chevron Houston Marathon Run for a Reason Charity Program hits $20 Million Mark

HOUSTON - The Houston Marathon Committee announced that the Chevron Houston Marathon Run for a Reason Charity Program has surpassed the $20 million fundraising mark since its inception in 1995. The charitable program is designed for runners to fundraise for local charities. In 2014 alone, over 16,000 donations were made to the 60 official Run for a Reason charities resulting in a record $2.6 million raised on race weekend.

"Over the past five years, the Run for a Reason charity program has served as a platform for our participants to raise over $10 million, which allowed us to reach the $20 million milestone so quickly, but we hope to do even more moving forward," said Wade Morehead, Executive Director of the Houston Marathon Committee. "We are ahead of last year's record-breaking pace and we are hoping to significantly increase the number of charity runners each year for the benefit of all of these wonderful philanthropies in the region."

Marine Corps Marathon Encourages Environmental Awareness

QUANTICO, Va. - The Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) aims to decrease any impact the event has on the environment. With more than 60 percent of the MCM course located on National Park lands, the MCM is partnering with the National Park Service and the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics asking runners and spectators to be considerate while discarding trash such as water cups, plastic bottles, gel packs and clothing items during "The People's Marathon." Over 30,000 runners and many more spectators will participate in the 39th MCM and MCM10K on Sunday, Oct. 26 in Arlington, VA and the nation's capital.

"Although U.S. Marines, volunteers and contractors will rally on Marathon Day to assist with trash and clothing pick-up from the Marathon and MCM10K courses, runners and spectators are being counted on to 'stash their trash' and to deposit it in containers located throughout the event," says MCM Director
Rick Nealis. "Everyone will want to be considerate of our national parks and memorials while keeping the environment healthy too."

RunVermont Announces New Vermont City Marathon Title Sponsor

BURLINGTON, Vermont - RunVermont executive director Peter Delaney announced that People's United Bank would be the new title sponsor of the Vermont City Marathon beginning with the 2015 race at a news conference on this week.
Next year's People's United Bank Vermont City Marathon is scheduled for May 24.

People's United Bank is only the second title sponsor in the 27-year-old history of the picturesque marathon that runs through the Burlington city streets and along the shores of Lake Champlain.

"It was such a great event. This was my first time here this year and I had heard great things, but seeing is really believing," said running legend Joan Benoit Samuelson. "I was blown away. Not only the caliber of the runners, but the spectators, the volunteers, the sponsors. Everybody has really come together to make this a marquee event."The marathon is the centerpiece of a running weekend that also includes the Sport & Fitness Expo and the MVP Health Care YAM Scram Youth Running Festival. Deena Kastor Sets Four World Masters Records at Rock 'n' Roll Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA - (Sept. 21, 2014) - Nothing appears to be stopping American distance-running ace
Deena Kastor. The 41-year-old Olympic bronze medalist and American marathon-record holder added another mark to her impressive and extensive resume this weekend: the Masters world record in the half-marathon. Kastor, who lives and trains in Mammoth Lakes, Calif., clocked 1 hour, 9 minutes and 36 seconds to finish third at the Rock 'n' Roll Philadelphia Half Marathon on Sunday
morning.

Along the way, Kastor also set three more Masters world records at 15K (49:03), 10 miles (52:41) and 20K (1:05:52). She also broke her own American Masters half-marathon record of 1:11:38.

Her showing was a 20-second improvement over the previous world best set by Russia's Irina Permitina in 2008.

Ethiopia's Aberu Kebede, the 2012 Berlin Marathon Champion, won the women's race in 1:08:40. Kenya's Caroline Rotich came in 41 seconds later at 1:09:21. Kastor said being able to keep an eye on both Kebede and Rotich throughout the race spurred her stay competitive during the miles where she had her doubts.
